Welcome to BanjoCraft. This website is the online companion for the BanjoCraft book by Robert Browder (apprentice) and Mac Traynham (master craftsman). Mac is a first-rate banjo maker, old-time musician, cabinet-maker, and mentor. Mac has been building banjos since the 1970’s. Mac’s work has inspired many musicians as well as a few banjo makers. During his early banjo making years Mac himself visited and observed banjo makers of the older generation.
This site is maintained by me, Robert Browder. I did a four-year apprenticeship with Mac. Mac encouraged me to document the banjo making processes that he taught me. The result of that documentation is the BanjoCraft book and this website. The BanjoCraft book hit the shelves several years ago. Its success has been encouraging enough to warrant this website for further discussion of banjo making technique and process.
BanjoCraft.com is one and a half years old now. It has a growing audience of readers, banjo players, and builders. It was featured as the June, 2016 “Site of the Month” by Dreamhost. On average, BanjoCraft gets between 500 and 1,000 page views per month with the best month ever being June, 2016 with a total of 2,360 page views.
